A new restaurant, Azul Bar y Cantina, opened up in Leetsdale/Sewickley on Saturday, and as an expert (or I should write, “since I consider myself an expert”) on Mexican food and the intake thereof, I checked the place out.
Ay ay ay.
Just gorgeous. You walk through the most beautiful double doors and into a different world. A prettier world. A world better than this one you’re sitting in right this second. The owner did not spare a single expense. The furniture is from Mexico, the tile backsplash on the bar (which the owner built himself from the wood of an old bridge in West Virginia) is from Mexico and will soon be in my kitchen if I have anything to say about it.
Shrimp skewers with mango chipotle dipping sauce? Not only is it an affordable appetizer, but after eating the sweet and barely spicy sauce, you’ll find yourself fighting the urge to head into the kitchen and start making out with the chef.
Franco Harris was there on Saturday checking out the food as well.
It is a small restaurant, and the owner was smart about hiring managers from Mexico. So the food is real. The margaritas rock. They make fresh tortillas and tortilla chips. Too bad it takes me 45 minutes to drive out there, but I’ll do it again. I suggest you also try the wet burritos. Yum!
Azul Bar y Cantina. NOT to be confused with Cozumel on Shadyside that took their old menu and put a new name on it.
Tell them PittGirl sent you, and then be sure to email me all about the blank looks that generates.
