Don’t you have something better to do, Mayor?

I can’t get a read on this guy Bob O’Connor. Yesterday, he and Police Chief Dom Costa went to Spring Hill to personally oversee and assist in the boarding up of abandoned (we hope) houses in the neighborhood.

At what point during the day does the mayor of a distressed city and the police chief of a city fighting a heroin problem and daily murders say to themselves, “I’m tired of this budget/police work shit. They are boarding up houses in Spring Hill. That is more important than this budget/homicide and I must PERSONALLY go and oversee it.”

On one hand, yeah they are serious about cleaning the city up, but on the other hand, isn’t it all a bit showy and overly cheesy that the Mayor feels the need to not only pick up a drill so the camera can catch him in the act of boarding up a house, but also to pat workers on the back as if they just saved a child from a burning building?

Empty, abandoned houses are often used as selling places for drugs or as places for users to gather and use drugs. In either case, the houses become risks for fires, attract rats from the food and drugs dropped on the floor, and lower property values. They’re sites for crime, including murder.

O’Conner is out there encouraging people who have to do a dull job. He’s making them feel important, which helps with morale. The morale bit’s important, especially to the workers themselves.

He’s also letting the people know something is being done. If he doesn’t pick up the drill, the item drops off the front page and probably doesn’t even make it onto the TV news. He’s selling the story, which is helpful both to his re-election and to getting the word out.

This one makes sense to me.

Ditto that. The drill handling may have been cheesy, but: that neighborhood is a short walk from downtown & the strip, has very affordable and available housing, and is charming, friendly, and offers thrilling city views. Unfortunately, every 4th house also looks a rotting mess, and just screams out for junkies and hookers, which is kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy. I just hope there’s some follow-thru on this initiative.

While in agreement with the above what comes immediatly to mind is:
Does Bobby have another suit, other than the dark blue one?
Does Dom have another, better fitting wig?

Bob is a great Mayor, we need dedication like his in the neighborhoods.
