Back to the convention center collapse for a moment if we can. Mary Conturo, the fluffly- haired head of the Sports and Exhibition Authority is taking some heat for not telling the SEA Board … or anyone for that matter, about the 2005 collapse at the center.
The same kind of connection caused the 2005 failure, allowing a steel beam to fall 2 1/2 inches. It did not fall to the ground only because a column blocked its path and held it up.
Conturo declined to comment on Logan’s remarks.
She has several supporters, including county Chief Executive Dan Onorato, who said Conturo handled the 2005 situation well.
“She didn’t do anything wrong,” Onorato said. “She fixed the problem. The only thing she didn’t do is, she forgot to tell us.”
Do you think if Dan went into his garage one morning to find his car had been totalled, asks his wife about it and she says, “Oh, yeah. I hit a garbage truck the other day. I totally forgot to tell you!”, that Dan will go, “Well honey, you handled that very well. Just try to remember to tell me next time.”
