Whoa, jackass. Whoa!

As Steeler Nation converged on the mall, word spread that the noon autograph session with defensive backs Anthony Smith and Ryan Clark had been canceled.

Clark, who was visiting family in New Orleans, arrived at the airport to find out his flight had been delayed. He would be unable to get another flight until early afternoon – too late for the autograph session at the mall. Anthony Smith wanted more money for his appearance.

“When he found out that Clark was unable to make it, he wanted us to double his fee,” said promoter Pete Ausiello of B&G Sports Memorabilia, who represents the four players who were to appear at the mall.

Anthony Smith? Who the hell are you?

I’ll tell you who you are … you are a giant giant jackass who has been a Steeler all of one whole year, whose most memorable play was your incredible display of jackassery after an interception last season, who is currently the backup to Ryan Clark, and who got a whopping $520,000 bonus check less than a year ago. You are paid handsomely to play football seven months out of the year. Shut up, show up, smile, and show a little teeny bit of class, you giant giant jackass.

You’ve been named the next Annoying Burgher. Your crown is in the mail, and by crown I mean a flaming bag of jackass poop.

Why would his salary need doubled? Did he think he would be signing twice as many autographs? Or was he planning to sign with two hands instead of one? Just because Clark wasn’t going to be there doesn’t mean Smith would be working twice as hard (duh). You’re correct as usual PG, what a jackass!!!

I would call him our sacred nickname for Santonio, but hey, why give him the honor.

Without the other guys there he did have to do twice the work.

Nice of everyone to start calling the guy names, without knowing the whole story.

Chase, that is some bogus thinking there. People get in line, wait for autographs for each player. Anthony would have signed every autograph of every person in line whether they then went on to another player or not. So in fact, NOT twice the work.

this was an assholish thing to do but “I’ll have fries with that” that is the dumbest thing. this guy is going to be special. he started all of what 3 or 4 games last season and had 2 INT he hits like he is 20-30lbs heavier and he is deceptively fast. he is not going to be some pushover. i realize it isn’t a burgh thing to be such an asshole or to celebrate prematurely. but this guys was one of the best on the defense last year while playing.

The sad thing about the NFL is that teams can’t just draft or sign players from their areas. The sad action of # 27 is not “The Steelers Way”. I was not there but I am sure that there are some kid Steelers fans that were very hurt by his actions. Pittsburghers don’t dog out Steeler fans for money! Steeler players should not dog out fans for $$$. That is BS and unclassy. I live in Ohio now (Which sucks by the way) but it just so happens that I meet a lot of other NFL players (Some are Steelers and some aren’t) but they all displayed respect for people!!!! Hey # 27 if you see this, make it right for the fans especially the young fans that will never see that kind of lute!!!!

It certainly was a dumb thing to do, but let’s cut the guy some slack. He’s one year removed from college, he’s still immature, hasn’t had that much time to absorb the Steeler way, considering that 1) he was drafted after the team won the Super Bowl; 2) the team was in a downward spiral and he was actually one of the few good things that happened last season; and 3) his only season with Bill Cowher as his coach was Bill’s only apathetic season of his coaching career. No matter what Bill said in public, he never bothered to discipline anyone last season.

Oh, and he’s going to be a cross between Polamalu and Ed Reed: a great ball hawk, with a seriously nasty streak in him. Wait and see, and relish it when it happens.

Thank you SteelerWatch, I agree that the guy is going to be good. And no Fries, you can’t have any of my Kool-Aid. ;-)

I met Anthony “lay the smack down” Smith. We talked, he was kind and gave me an autograph and took a really nice picture with me for free. He was great.
He was with a group of newbies who seemed to be getting coached how to behave with fans in public. For instance, none of the players took thier hands off the table, or get chatty. When one rude fan kept shoving things in front of Ike Taylor to sign and didnt even give him a “Have a good season”, he simply bit his tongue and sort of winked at me since i was staring at the lady with my mouth open at her rudeness. These guys are young and this has to be overwhelming to them. We are a exuberant fan base. Anthony Smith will be amazing but has alot to learn when it comes to being humble. Give him some time with the Rooney’s, it rubs off.
