A few things.

1.  Just wanted to let you know that reader Red Pen Mama (comment #47) was the lucky winner of the shirt, gift certificate, tickets, calendar, and Google Wave giveaway when Random Number Generator spit out her number.

I already have something else awesome that I’m going to give away shortly, so if you didn’t win Steelers tickets and if you didn’t win this contest, maybe the next one will be yours.

Or maybe you’ll get bubkes.  One never knows.

2.  As I told you last week, I’ll be speaking at PodCamp Pittsburgh 4 on Saturday afternoon with butler Mike and if you haven’t registered to attend this free conference, it is sold out and once again, you get bubkes.  I understand there’s a waiting list and that occasionally spots are opening up as cancellations occur.  Good luck with it.

3. Last night I sat down to write my column when I realized my deadline is not the 8th; it is the 10th.  Being the responsible writer that I am, I said “WOO! 48 more hours!” then flicked my computer off and went to watch Glee and drink wine.

As for my column topic … I got bubkes.

4. Bubkes is a fun word to say, so I just want to say it one more time.

Bubkes.

Also, sausages.

    Congrats to Red Pen Mama!

“Bubkes” sounds like a Russian pancake or something. “Yes, I’ll have the potato bubkes, please.”

I like to say the word “whimsey.”

Whimsey whimsey whimsey. I feel better already.

I think your column should be about Yiddish and how people use it all the time and have no idea it is Yiddish and then argue how to spell it. Shlemiels. Shlimazels. (Actually I think it’s “bupkis.”)

    Googling produced —-

The word bupkiss, often also spelled bupkis, means, as you say, ‘absolutely nothing’. In negative constructions (for example, “He didn’t know bupkis”), it means ‘the least thing; anything at all’.

Bupkis is a borrowing from Yiddish, where it literally means ‘beans’. The reference is to how inexpensive and common beans are.

I think “Bubkes” might be the new, Mexican side dish at Las Velas. “I’ll have two burritos, with a side of beans and bubkes.” Yum!

I was thinking the Bupkus was the right way. Goat droppings — love that!
