A glance at my family’s sports-watching conversations

Prior to the start of the Penguins season opener.

My sister Pens Fan’s living room.

Gathered around the grotesquely giant TV.

This appears on screen:

(“George Stroumboulopoulos”)

BIL: Did you see that guy’s last name? Is that a joke?

Dad: You’d think he’d shorten it to something less than 75 letters.

Me: I missed it. Go back! [bloop bloop bloop] No. WAY!

BIL: How many letters is that really?

Me: 1, 2, 3 … 14, 15, 16, 17. So, 7 too many. I’d like to see that on the back of a jersey.

Father: He should shorten it to Stroum.

Me: Or at least remove all the vowels. How do you even say that? “Strombopolopolous?”

Pens Fan: No. Strombolopolus.

Me: That’s what I said.

Pens Fan: That’s not what you said.

Dad: Strombosnuffleupagus?

BIL: Strombopopopopolous?

Me: Papageorgio?

Don’t you wish your family was legitimately insane like mine?

Glad we weren’t the only ones to catch that “name”…my wife did a WTF is that when she saw it…I figured it was a Greek STD…then we had to endure that lame emo-band…wtf ? Is Toronto that lame they couldn’t at least find Barenaked Ladies or Glass Tiger – you know, something more masculine than that band to get FaceOff 2010 started ?!

Oh well….’GUINS WIN TONIGHT – beat the Devil, they soff tonight (sorry, Therrin slip)

Speaking of names, what about that over-hyphenated Devil scratched from today’s game, Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond? No wonder New Jersey has cap problems. He counts as two players.

@Magnus, you do realize that’s French, right?

Our family is pretty similar. It’s almost scary how you just climbed into my head and typed out our exact conversation.
